Italy
Bolzano-Cortina d'Ampezzo - This is a must for mountain lovers. This drive is fringed with rugged cliffs and limestone walls. The 100 km drive cutting through the Dolomites in the Italian Alps is amazing and full of twists and turns.

Switzerland
Great St. Bernard Pass - from Martigny to San Bernardino, 56km, one of the most renowned passes in Alpine Europe. The Swiss section of the pass road begins in French-speaking Martigny and ends in Italian-speaking San Bernardino.

Furka Pass - tour southwest to northeast you'll see the frozen mass of the glacier that feeds the Rhone. This road follows a high altitude frontier between the German and Italian speaking Switzerland.

The Netherlands
Flower Route - Haarlem-Leiden, 25 miles. This drive has one of the best concentrations of flower fields to be seen. Fields along the road have gorgeous strips of colour from the start of the flowering season which is late January to the end in early May. Stop and purchase from roadside sellers.

Hawaii. Hana Highway - a 52 mile drive from Kahului to Hana. A 4 wheel drive is ideal for this journey. The ocean on your left, whilst on the right is a jungle of bamboo and fruit trees and gorgeous waterfalls. Be sure to make many stops en route to of course make the most of the spectacular scenery that awaits you on this drive.

Alaska. Seward Highway - for blue glaciers, sharp mountains, waterfalls and whales, this drive has it all. Anchorage-Seward, 204 kilometres

Dalton Highway - Livengood-Prudhoe Bay, 414 miles. Cross the Yukon River, pass over the North Slope and end at the Arctic Ocean. It's a mostly gravel thoroughfare. Don't expect to see many services but do expect dramatic scenery. Recommended for the more experienced driver.

Florida Keys - Overseas Highway. Mainland Florida-Key West, 181 kilometres. This highway stretches across a heavy expanse of water with the Atlantic on the left and the Gulf on the right. Highway 1 is typical America with burger bars selling,milkshakes and fries to gift shops where you can purchase seashell necklaces

Vermont Cheese Trail - Plymouth Notch-Websterville, 450 kilometres. Sample the best cheeses imaginable en-route. Why not call in on some of the half dozen cheese makers en route. They all offer tours and you can purchase the products.

Colorado - ghost towns, fossil beds, towering mountains and a gorge await you on this trip heading west on U.S. 24 from Colorado Springs.
June to September is the best time to drive this 225 mile loop which includes Cripple Creek, South Park City and St Elmo.

Alberta Canada - from the fringe of the great plains you will climb through the magnificent mountain scenery of Banff and Jasper National Parks experiencing forest, crag and glacier. Elk bears and other wild animals can be seen while this amazing 264 mile drive.

Kentucky. Bourbon Trail - wind through bourbon country on the bluegrass byways. Smell the mint growing by the roadside as you drive through, stop for a look at the white water rapids. Louisville, Bardstown and Frankfort associate in a large triangle. There are many distilleries to try on this road trip.

Brandywine Valley - Pennsylvania and Delaware. Drive through scenic chateau country where narrow twisting roads are shaded by overhanging branches. You wont see billboards here, just wildflowers lining the roadsides.

Cape Cod Massachusetts - 160 miles. Starting on Cape Cod canal on the capes Northern coast and passing through many stop offs such as Provincetown and Chatham you will end at Woods Hole. You should allow 3 or 4 days to enjoy this journey. Best taken from Spring to Autumn when the temperature is moderate.

Australia

Western Australia has some amazing drives together with Beverley to County Peak where you will drive through the Jarrah forests and the gorgeous landscapes of the Dale River.

Things to reconsider when renting a car abroad

Whether you are finding for car hire at Heathrow airport, or of course anywhere else in the world, there are a amount of things to consider.
