The Great Time Competition

#1. The Great Time Competition

The Great Time Competition

If the earth is divided into 24 sections, each in the shape of a wedge to mark 24 time zones, why on earth are they so irregular in shape? Well, this is because no country in the world fits perfectly into any one wedge. In increasing to this "politically correct" reason, countries also keep changing their time according to the seasons to make the most use of the solar time available. Also, every place on earth calculates its own local time or thorough time thereby falling under a singular time zone. Every adjacent time zone is either one hour ahead or one hour behind its closest neighbor. Talk about the competition of the "times"!

Incredible Facts about Time Converters

Unbelievable but true! Any date on the calendar actually exists at some point or the other for 50 hours on the globe! No wonder we need a time zone converter. In fact, there exist places on the earth where any time zones converge! Wonder how many watches citizen wear in these places? Wonder how time zone converters work at such places! Fractional hour offsets and zonal offsets of more than 12 hours have caused the creation of 40 time zones! That's 16 more than the traditional number of time zones! Although China and Afghanistan are neighbors, their political boundaries require a time gap of three and a half hours! The Australian Central Western Tz (Cwst) calculates its local time as Utc+8:45 whereas its actual time gap according to Australian time is just 1.5 hours!

Alphabet Zones! The American way!

The Us time zone map is clearly defined for the areas that come under the contiguous U.S. If we try to form out how these zones are formed, we understand that there are four zones named R, S, T, and U, going from east to west. These might look like the randomly excellent letters of an alphabet soup, but there is a fancy that the Us time zone map has these letters. Lets take a closer look at these zones.

* Zone R (Est) combining the states on the Atlantic coast and the eastern two thirds of the Ohio Valley.
* Zone S (Cst) encompassing mostly the Gulf Coast, Tennessee Valley, and Great Plains.
* Zone T (Mst) with mostly the states that contain the Rocky Mountains.
* Zone U (Pst) for the states on the Pacific coast and Nevada.

An Act in Time to Save!

Too many cooks do spoil the broth! And when it came to choosing the United States time, many officials tried to advise and even forced whole regions to adopt dissimilar thorough time zones leading to utter blurring among the people. In a way, the earliest of railroads in the United States not just brought cities within each easy reach of each other, they also helped bring some sanity into the way the United States time zones were being decided. It prevented officers from creating dissimilar time zones based on conflicting ideas, theories, and policies. It was not until 1918, that the U.S. Congress finally decided upon the thorough Time Act to adopt the thorough Time Zone for the United States. There are 9 zones observed throughout the states and territories of the Usa. An act in time, as some would say!

The Atlantic Tz does not contain any state of the United States but it does contain the island of Puerto Rico, which is a territory of the United States. The Gmt is -3 and it does not recognize Daylight saving Time.

The Godfather - Starring the Canadian Time Zone

Not many citizen know that the humble Canadian Time Zone is actually the Big Daddy or the Godfather of all time zones. Yes, the Canadian Time Zone was actually one of the first time zones ever to be invented in any place in the world. More than a hundred years ago in 1878, the concept of time zones was first promulgated by Canada's Sir Sandford Fleming (no relation to Sir Ian Fleming, the originator of James Bond). Sir Sandford Fleming proposed that the "universal day" must begin at Greenwich and hourly times must be computed locally. This concept was later adopted by the International Meridian discussion in 1884 and is still implemented all over the world.
